St. Angela's Academy

Convent and Private Catholic Girls School in Prelate, Saskatchewan.

In 1912, war clouds were looming on the horizon in Europe. During that year members of several religious orders came to Canada and among them were the Ursulines of Cologne, Germany. They came to Winnipeg , then were invited to teach at Grayson, Saskatchewan.

In 1919, Father Joseph Reidinger, O.M.I. was sent to Prelate, Saskatchewan as parish priest. Upon Father Reidinger's invitation and guided by the Spirit, Mother Clementia Graffelder with two other Sisters established a foundation in Prelate, Saskatchewan in 1919. They arrived in Prelate in spring and by May 31 the site "on the hill" was selected for the new convent and excavation began. On December 8, 1919, St. Angela's Convent, Prelate, was officially blessed. From the very beginning, the Sisters began to teach the children from the surrounding areas.

The Act of Incorporation of the Ursulines of St. Angela's Convent was passed in the Legislature of the Province of Saskatchewan on December 19, 1924.

The present Academy, part of the Convent Complex, has expanded over the years. In 1967 the Academy became eligible for private school funding by the Department of Education. In 1991 it was recognized in an Act of Legislature as one of the independent historical high schools in Saskatchewan.

From the beginning, girls came to obtain an education for life, and some came to enter the Ursuline Order. The school could hold seventy-five girls who can be accommodated.

The school closed in 2007 and was put up for sale. It was purchased and reopened as the Islamic Academy of Saskatchewan.
