As with most facilities/institutions from the era, the Weyburn Mental Hospital had a separate power plant. The power plant was connected to the main hospital by an underground tunnel which contained pipes and utilities. These tunnels were known as "steam tunnels" and contrary to popular belief they were not used for transporting bodies and the stacks were not from cremation. The power plant contained boilers which heated the other buildings and later used to distribute utility wires.
Fun fact: Before demolition was complete, one of the historic generators was relocated to a museum in Ontario.
