Sukanen Ship Pioneer Village and Museum

A pet friendly museum with thousands of artifacts and something for everyone!

Sukanen Museum has become one of our favourite museums in Saskatchewan, and it's just outside of Moose Jaw! The best part of the museum is that they are pet friendly (must be leashed) so you can bring your whole family with you. It's mostly wheelchair accessible, and because it's so spread out, you'll likely won't be stuck in crowds (unless you attend an event). The museum offers a self-guided tour, allowing you to go at your own pace.

They offer many exhibits in historical buildings that are local to the province. Exhibits include a pioneer village, a Tom Sukanen Ship, a firefighter history exhibit, a grain elevator, and a massive car collection. There is truly something for everyone, as long as you like history. Each exhibit is very well done with full history and artifacts. This museum is huge so give yourself a few hours to see everything. We recommend at least three hours if you want to see everything.

The Museum started in 1969 when the local Antique Automobile club of Saskatchewan purchased the land eight miles south of Moose Jaw. The purchase was made to construct a building to display cars and host rallies.

It wasn't long before local communities wanted their buildings to be preserved and donated them to the museum. This was the birth of the Prairie Pioneer Village and Museum.

The museum changed it's name in 1977 to reflect the donation of the Sukanen Ship, a unique part of Saskatchewan's history.

Today there are over 50 buildings which all represent early prairie life. The museum is home to hundreds of thousands of artifacts including antique trucks, cars, machinery, equipment and more. There is also a 100 year old elevator from the town of Mawer, Saskatchewan. The museum is mostly run on volunteer efforts which is amazing. Don't forget to check their website for special events like the threshing bee, family day, show & shine, antique show and more.
