Descent of the Holy Spirit (Chekhiv/Chechow)

Ukrainian Catholic church of Chekihiv (Chechow), Saskatchewan

The church of the Descent of the Holy Ghost, also known as Chekhiv or Chechow is the first church of the parish constructed in 1906. It was relocated in 1927 to a different area of the property. Construction of the church cost of $3,000 and was built by volunteer labour. The two-acre church and cemetery site was donated. A belfry with three bells was constructed near the church during its relocation in 1927; the metal cross was installed in 2002.

Ukrainian settlement in this area began in 1902. In 1941, the parish consisted of 30 families with 60 children. Today the church is still under the local parish charge and holds one service a year.

The name “Chekhiv” originates from a village in the Buchach county of Halychyna (Galicia).
