Whitkow - Holy Spirit Church

Ukrainian Orthodox church in Whitkow, Saskatchewan

The Holy Spirit Ukrainian Orthodox church was located in the town of Whitkow, Saskatchewan. It was built in 1933 and the first service was held in April 1934 for Easter. The church was closed in 1988 but still had the occasional service including funerals.

The church obtained Municipal Heritage Property status through the RM of Round Hill in 2001. Unfortunately, this was revoked (not sure of the year) which paved the way for its demolition through burning in 2013.

When Alicia visited this church around 2010 the dome was leaking and the water damage was obvious. There were multiple buckets capturing water, plastic covering items and a fundraising initiative inside. The church also had an abandoned hall nearby.

The church was burned by the congregation in 2013. Read more here: www.sasktoday.ca/north/in-the-community/a-historic-passing-at-whitkow-4035325. The side wall of the hall collapsed and it was eventually demolished years after the church. Today there is a monument on site.
