St. Nicholas (Brooksby)

Abandoned Ukrainian Catholic church on Maryville road

St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic church is the first church of the parish built in 1912 at a cost of $950.

Located near Brooksby on a hilly and partially forested the church is made of wood constructed in a cruciform plan. The main entrance is through a porch. The church is east-west oriented with the main altar separated from the main potion by an iconostas. The painted iconostas were done by P. Lypynsky of Edmonton, Alberta.  Along the side walls are two small side altars with traditional paintings of the Mother of God and Christ the Redeemer. A small choir loft extends west side of the main area.

The church site has a belfry with three bells, a mission cross, and a parish hall constructed in 1933. This is the second parish hall, the first was constructed in 1918 and is no longer standing today. The parish cemetery is across the road.

The church is under the pastoral charge of Melfort and no longer holds services. We have been told that the interior has been emptied out.
