Wishart - St. Michael the Archangel

St. Michael Ukrainian Greek Catholic church near Wishart, Saskatchewan.

St. Michael is a Ukrainian Greek Catholic church located near the town of Wishart, Saskatchewan. The first church was built in 1908 and used until 1924. While the building was donated to Bankend parish in 1945 a cemetery still remains on site. The second church, as you see today, was built 3 miles away from the first church in 1924 on land purchased from the CPR.

The second church of the parish (1924), bell tower (1916), a parish hall (1936), a mission cross (1939) and a cemetery on site (second of the parish). The church is a wooden building with a large high central dome, two side altars, choir loft, main alter, two sacristies and high vaulted ceilings. The interior has wooden pews for about 100 people. The building has electricity and is heated by central oil. On it's 50th anniversary the parish commissions artist Theodore Baran  from Saskatoon to create murals.

The church is a municipal heritage property in Saskatchewan. The heritage value comes from the Ukrainian settlers in the area who began arriving in 1907. The church is a local landmark in the community and still holds services. It is well loved and we highly recommend a visit if you are in the area.
